Spaying, neutering, vaccinating the strays in Katzrin

March 2005
Happy Purim and Easter to all. Here in Israel, Purim is such a strange holiday. Suddenly, in the streets and clubs, there are huge two-legged Hebrew speaking cats. But, as the month of Adar ends, life returns to normal; this pedigree of cat disappears and we are left with the familiar looking four-legged kitties who speak kitty language; those critters we love and for whom we are responsible.

We received a wonderful holiday gift. Last night we were informed by the General Director of the Interior Ministry here in Israel, Mr. Gideon Bar Lev, that a decision was made to forward 40,000 NIS for spaying/neutering/vaccination of the strays in Katzrin. The project will begin this coming Sunday (27 March 2005) and will continue for approximately one week. As well as being neutered, the cats will receive vaccinations and any other medical treatment necessary at the time. They will then be returned their feeding areas. I would like to thank all who helped to make this humane and enlightened project possible.

Since this is a holiday season and we have all put on some extra weight from the holiday food., I’ll only give you a taste of what we have been doing since our last newsletter:

In Nethanya we have spayed/neutered and vaccinated 29 cats found near the esplanade. All were in a bad nutritional state. Amongst them was a gorgeous female kitten who came to our office. As soon as she has recuperated she will love to be placed in a warm and loving home. At the present time, a group of caring people is getting organized in order to promote the Trap/Neuter/Return project in Nethanya. Anyone from Nethanya interested in helping out is invited to send us an email with his/her details and we will pass them on to the organizers.

a.. More from Nethanya: Over the last few days, we absorbed approx. 15 cats from 80 year old "R", who is leaving for overseas to receive medical treatment.

b.. We have also absorbed to our Sanctuary as many as 70 cats who were in dire straights and needed urgent help.

c.. With respect to the help we are offering to the 40 cats whose feeder is required to vacate her home on the Moshav, we were overwhelmed with the number of mails/phone calls we received from those willing to add cats to their own feeding areas. As the specific cats are used to "country living", we are trying to find such a solution for them. Thank you to all who contacted us and we will contact you within a few days to see where we go from here.

d.. At the Cat-Inn Cattery in Even Yehuda, there are approx. 16 abandoned cats. Two of them are very stressed, therefore are not up for adoption at this point. There are two adorable kittens and all the others are adults who would love to be adopted by a loving, patient family who will be kind to them, love them and provide them with a happy and safe future. The first "Adoption Day" took place today, Saturday, 26th March, 2005.

The next one takes place towards the end of this coming week.

As you have probably already noticed, the kitten season has arrived. At any specific moment we receive calls requesting that we collect and take care of newly born kittens. We are unable to do so.

The CWSI is in the process of rehabilitation and organizational change and, therefore, is unable to personally take care of orphaned kittens and the little ones who are found. We don’t have the provisions necessary, neither with respect to manpower, or the space, technical provision or the financial resources. I cannot pass the death sentence on to the CWSI should we all have to utilize our time to feed the kittens. Nor can I pass the death sentence on to the kittens by taking them in, knowing very well that we cannot truly look after them, as they need. But, then again, I can’t seal their fate by sending them to the "injection".

CWSI must focus on building the future and not on saving just one life… It hurts me to say this. But it is true. If, on the one hand, we don’t take care of strengthening the CWSI now and, on the other hand, take care of fundamental issues with long-term impact, there will be no tomorrow for us, and tomorrow there will be no one for the cats.

Therefore, I implore you, please don’t put us to the test. Don’t ask us to take in orphan kittens. Do all you can to look after them, to find them a nursing cat or foster family. We are unable to help at this point. The CWSI belongs to us all and we are all partners.

Look how we succeeded in Katzrin when we acted as ONE. Look how we managed to organize the fundraising event with Yehuda Poliker. This is the only way we can succeed in our mission.

In order to try and help, even in a small way, we request from anyone who can act as a foster family for kittens or sick cats and anyone who has, or knows of anyone who has, a nursing mother cat, to please let us know by email. This way we will be able, in times of trouble, to help and save lives together.

Happy Holidays to us all.
